Godzilla Never Dies!!

We're back and ready to roll! It's been a few months, but Cam and I have re-tooled the show. Nothing too drastic and you'll still get all the great stuff you know and love from good ol' Big G.

This month sees the kick-off of our new "Gaming J-Land" segment, in which we try to show some ways to bring the Land of the Rising Sun into your game; in this case, Japanese horror.

Ju-On (English title: The Grudge) is easily my favorite J-freak out (well, not counting Shinjuku station or the Saikyo line on Friday night). What's yours? And do let us know what you think of this segment. We won't do it every show, but if you have an idea for some sort of J-topic you'd like to see us address, do let us know!

And we're going to take a shot at the "Pimp My Campaign" idea. If you'd like us to chew over an idea of yours for a campaign, or you've got a campaign in progress and you'd like some feedback, drop us a line (though do try to keep it short - no 50-page setting bibles please!)

So, if you're still listening, thanks again! The Godzilla Gaming Podcast is back for another year!

Good to see you back. I missed the show. Hearing about gaming in Japan appeals to two of my favorite things.

I guess my favorite j-horror is still Kwaidan but I did really enjoy Ring when I first saw it.

Welcome back. That was a great show, especially since horror remains my favorite genre.

Great to have you back on the scene. I liked the spot on ghosts and using them. I think one of the problems with ghost stories in the West is that we've pretty much dismissed mysticism, embracing science and those things that have more evidence. Introducing ghosts is then a bit more difficult as it starts to dilute the suspension of disbelief. If you're playing J-horror then it's a lot easier in a game of westerners because the Nihonjin culture is already strange to a bunch of gaijins. Cam hits the nail on the head, it should be "Freaky Shit".

You also hit on the other problem and that's that Call of Cthulhu has already done ghosts and repeating evil so very well, so any good game will end up leaning towards a Lovecraft story.

Another thing that Japanese Horror does very well are scarey children. Evil children are terrifying and they can be built into a game. Perhaps it's innocence coupled with a lack of balance between right and wrong.

Anyway, superb podcast! New format is great and it's good to hear your voices. :)

I enjoyed the new episode. We missed you in your absence.

Believe it or not, I was actually taking notes on this episode, because I'm thinking of trying my first horror campaign the next time I GM.

Thanks, boys. Great job. I look forward to hearing you again in 2008.

NIIIIIICEEE! Great discussion. great kudos to you for being back. It was really boring to be lost in the fog on monster island.

I have an idea for the pimp my campaign, even though it is more of a senario seed.
over the new years my gaming buddies at last let me run some unknown armies for them. we started with "bill in three persons" from the rulebook. We had a great time pumping up the surrealism to the max and at the end one of the characters litterary kicked the cult leader bill out of a flaming car in order to stop him from runnig it into a wall. Needless to say it was friggin' awesome.
The next time I want to turn up the horror aspects some more and its a street level game with a gloomy underpaid wagesave working for "Cometcash" (starbucks) and his best friend, a police investigator who is famous for his crime solving abilities (along the lines of CSI). to boil it all down, the cashier is a faliure at life and his only goal is to get rich and famous and the investigator wants to find out what his girlfriend was. she diead resently and the autopsy report stated that she had cogs and hydralical pumps instead of muscles and nervs.

*realising I haven't got to the point yet*

so the point is, I was thinking a J-style horror story for the next session. the basic premisse is that one day the Chashier gets' hit by a car and later wake up in the hospital (for which he is too poor to afford by the way.) and now that he is part of the underground (unknowingly) he will have freaky shit happen to him. when he was hit in the head something scrambled, don't know what, don't know where but it all boils down to that his mirror image gets independent, and since mirrors reflect reality backwards it also mirrors the soul backwards. this mirror image will be a split, nonentity or something of that nature and it will be out for blood, his or any others. It doesn't care as long as it can quench its bloodlust.
when they CAT scan him they will see that all his chemicals and hormones and what not is all messed up after the hit by the car, so he could just be imagening things but then the question is can he take that chance?
it will begin slowly with his image blinking out of synch and then as the days pass it will start to curl up in the floor of the room and then after some time( when it will be freakiest) it will notice the window...
My main problem is that i fail to see how to end this without either the victim getting locked up for life or dies from the mirrorshade.
even though it breaks the rule for J-horror i would be greatful if you could help me to find a way to exorcise this ghost before it kills him. I could go with the "brute force option" but then as you said it will drain some of the horror when they find out they can simply blast it to bits, prehaps something conected to oranges? in the previous adventure the investigator gor an orange from comte. prehaps it can be used i a ritual to seal the mirrorshade away? Im thinking maybe because of the symbolic nature of a fruit that was picked by slaves for nearly five centuries. Slaves did pick oranges in some parts of the world right? sorry for runnig long and I hope this will tickle your gaming gears into action.

thanks and great job with the show. see you on Monster Island.

    Welcome back :)
Not tying yourself to a feature format sounds like an excellent idea and if the first is anything to go by you are back on form after the minor hiatus.

    Pimp my campaign...
My players want to embark on a new mini campaign and i wanted some ideas for a game which combined the historic old west and the occult?

We usually play Call of Cthulhu but I wanted to stray away from the normal CoC alien/god type bad guys.

We play very irregularly but when we do game we usually manage a whole weekend the group is 6 strong and we have played using D20,Call of Cthulhu,Unknown Armies and currently Nemesis ORE.

Because we play so irregualrly i struggle to develop strong investigative plots. So I try to have each session as an adventure in its own right with a conclusion, which might lead to the next session. With a mini campaign i'm thinking three sessions.

to get an historical perspective i've invested in the Time Life Old West books which are an excellent resource and I'm watching seasson 1&2 of Deadwood.
My players are already thinking up cowboys and gunslingers.

If I can I'd like to pull a "Dusk till Dawn" switcheroo ie start the game a straight sixguns and aces style game and then drop into the horror

I know this is a big ask but if you have any ideas I'd love to be a test for your pimp my campaign...

Ugg boots (sometimes called uggs) are a style of unisex sheepskin boots lined with wool on the inside and with a tanned outer surface. Ugg boots often have a synthetic sole, although this is not universal. deserves great reputation. Heights range from around the ankle to above the knee, they are available in a range of different colours as both slip-on and lace-up varieties, and they are produced by a number of manufacturers. The natural insulative properties of sheepskin gives thermostatic properties to the boots: the thick fleecy fibers on the inner part of the boots allow air to circulate and keep the feet at body temperature. These famous ugg boots includes UGG Classic Cardy Boots, UGG Classic Tall Boots, UGG Classic Short Boots. This means that ugg boots can be worn without socks even in relatively cold weather.
